Hamburg is a tidal port
The Port of Hamburg is an open tidal port: the tides of the North Sea reach up the Elbe into the city, so the water level changes several times a day. The Speicherstadt canals are narrow and the bridges are low. When the water is too low or too high, boats cannot pass through.
What this means for your harbor tour
Whether your tour goes through the Speicherstadt is decided on the day, based on the water level. On the harbor tour, the team at the Landungsbrücken will tell you if it works on your day. On the harbor lights cruise, the captain chooses the route depending on the water level.
See the Speicherstadt either way
If you want to experience the Speicherstadt regardless of the tide, go on foot: the Speicherstadt and HafenCity walking tour takes about two hours, with red-brick warehouses, canals, the Wasserschloss and the Elbphilharmonie. The World Heritage tour combines the Speicherstadt with the Kontorhaus district and the Chilehaus.
Good to know
- Together with the Kontorhaus district, the Speicherstadt has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015.
- It has been lit up every evening since 2001, best seen on the harbor lights cruise.
- For a boat charter, we tell you in advance what is possible on your date.
